One Last Run for May

I felt that I could get one more good run in, to at least get to 3/4 of my goal for the month.  It was thundering out there, the temperature dropped to a nice pleasant something.  I started out with an old loop around the neighborhood, then up to Samford and back.

Hot End of May

I don't think I'll get out again tomorrow, so this is where I'm likely to hang it up for the month.  Not even close to my monthly goal. Sigh.  I just have to keep trying.  Tonight I went up Gay to Samford, and then turned out toward Dean.  Down Dean to University, and back home that way.

Getting Hot/ 4

I tried to convince my daughter to come out with me on a shorter, slower run.  She was up for it yesterday, but I wasn't, then this morning I was up for it but she wasn't.  Rather than argue, I decided to model the behavior of getting out and running.  Instead of doing the shorter route, I went up to Samford and back, my 4 mile route.  It's definitely getting hot out there, to be running at 10:00 am.

Run/walk with the kiddies

I've pretty much resigned myself to not hitting my target this month.  Bad way to start the new year.  However, my girls (age 8 and 6) have expressed an interest in going out running with me, and now that they are out of school we had a chance to do that.  Being the first run, we couldn't go very far, so I opted to go up and over the hill to the Ogletree/Wright's Mill stop sign and back.  I explained to them both, not to try and run way ahead of me only to get tired and have to stop, but to try and keep up with me.  My older daughter went on a run with me previously, and this is what happened.  But this time, Veronica did great, keeping up with me at a decent pace. Violet, on the other hand, got tired very quickly and ended up doing a lot of walking and fussing.  I'm proud of my girls for getting out with me, and hopefully Veronica will be ready for the 5k series.

No playlist, just chatting.

Return of It

First run since my bday.  It's getting warm out there, and I should be trying to get out earlier.  Today I went down to Chewacla and back, then turned into the neighborhood across from Ogletree, Wright's Crossing I think it's called.  That made for a 4.56 mile loop altogether.  So my new goals for the new year: 40 miles a month, no run less than 4 miles, and try and complete 1 full marathon.

Cinco de Miles/RIP MCA

Today is Cinco de Mayo of course, so of course my course was cinco de miles, because that's the kind of goofy person I am.  I ran up University to Donahue, and up College to that road just before Samford and back down Gay St.  I had a good pace going for the first three miles (under 8 minutes), but slowed down quite a bit on the last two, and felt it. The Map My Run app now has a nice lady who reports my mileage and pace at each mile, which I'm not quite sure if I like or not, but it's a new thing so let's see how it affects my performance.

On a more solemn note, Adam Yauch aka MCA passed away yesterday from cancer. In his memory, I put together an all Beastie Boys playlist.  I grew up with the Beastie Boys.  I remember buying "Licensed to Ill" on vinyl when it first came out, when I was a freshman or sophomore in high school.  I remember the video for "Fight For Your Right to Party" playing on MTV, and while I wasn't a big partier in high school, the F-you attitude hit me right in the teen angst and resonated.  I remember a good friend in college making me listen to Paul's Boutique, and blowing my mind.  The return to playing of instruments, MCA's conversion to Buddhism, and now... gone.  Rest in peace, MCA.

Fail, fall down, get up, get going again

So last month ended in abysmal failure.  I failed to meet my monthly mileage quota by a lot, mostly because I failed to get in my third half-marathon, which I was registered for and ready to go to, but my brain kept me away.  Excuses: I had a lot of work to do,  my daughter's softball team needed me,   I've had some personal crises in my life that made ten hours of driving alone and staying in a strange cheap hotel room only to physically exhaust myself all seem, um, unpalatable, to put it mildly.  So.  There's that.

Moving on to this month.  It's been getting warm again, so it's getting to that time of year where I need to put my miles in around the heat.  Today, it's supposed to thunderstorm, and I can hear the thunderheads rolling in.  I knew that three days into May I had to get going or get deeper into the hole, so I chose the former.  I opted for my favorite four mile, up to Samford and back.
